How to stop procrastinating

Hands up if you procrastinate!

Hands up if you feel bad about procrastinating!

What I want to offer you today is the question – what if procrastinating was ok? What if you could be gentle with yourself instead?

As a human being we are programmed to seek pleasure and avoid pain and that doesn’t always neatly coincide with the actions we are wanting to take.

This is normal. This is human. You don’t need to beat yourself up for this.

I’ve coached many many people through procrastination and the first thing that always comes up is the guilt and shame. Removing this is half the battle to reducing procrastination in your life.

The second thing that comes up is unprocessed emotions – we want to run away and hide and not face up to the discomfort. We don’t even admit this to ourselves. We hide it from ourselves. So we end up spinning and procrastinating.

So my advice to you is to get curious about what is going on for you, about where the fear might be and be compassionate with yourself! There are reasons why you aren’t taking the action you think you want to take. Get really interested in what those reasons might be instead of beating yourself up.

You might not be able to resolve the discomfort immediately, but understanding what is going on will be the key to unlocking it.

By being kind to yourself you are much more likely to get out of the procrastination cycle.

Try it for yourself and let me know how it goes!
