Motivation, procrastination, creating good habits and discipline all go hand in hand, but often, once one of these starts to slip, the others soon follow. Maybe you find yourself procrastinating and feeling stuck. Don’t panic. It is likely this is just a temporary block and you will find your path back…
Where to start if you find you are lacking motivation
- Start wherever feels easiest
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Start small, start easy, just start.
2. Read ‘Atomic Habits’ by James Clear
I can’t get enough of this book – the crux of the argument being that small and regular is much more likely to get you where you want to be than trying to do too much. If you’re lacking motivation right now, ask yourself what the smallest thing is you could do to get you heading in the right direction, the thing that only takes 2 minutes and just do that. No more, no less. Then do it again. And again. Build the smallest of habits to start with and just watch how it grows!
3. Question your assumptions
How does it feel when you tell yourself you aren’t motivated? It usually doesn’t feel very good, it isn’t a very helpful thought. So why not try flipping it around and ask yourself some interesting questions instead…see if you can create some more helpful thoughts…
- What would I be doing if I was motivated?
- What am I doing when I feel most motivated?
- What thoughts would create a feeling of motivation for me?
- What am I doing when I am at my best?
- How would I know if I was feeling motivated?
Take some time to explore these questions with yourself. Understanding who you are when motivated and what that looks and feels like to you can really help you connect back with that feeling and help you unlock the path towards it
